An illness at the age of two left Helen Keller deaf and blind. If anyone had the right to be bitter and complain, it was she.
At six years of age, Helen was nearly impossible to deal with. Then a twenty-year-old woman named Ann Sullivan became Helen Keller's teacher, mentor and partner. She later became known as the "Miracle Worker". She achieved a breakthrough with Helen that no one could understand. She taught Helen to spell and communicate before she reached the age of seven years old! Helen Keller went on to become one of the most inspirational writers and speakers. One of the things she wrote was "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet, only through the experience of trials and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired and success achieved". It's hard to believe someone who lived in darkness and silence wrote this. She also said," Be of good cheer, do not think of today's failures but think of the success that will come tomorrow. You have set for yourself a difficult task but you will succeed if you persevere and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles".
Helen Keller was deaf and blind, she endured the heartbreak of a broken engagement, she suffered the loss of all her possessions in a fire and mourned the death of her life-long partner and mentor but still she went on to inspire people from all walks of life.
Five steps to maintain a Thankful Heart and develop a spirit of Gratitude.
1. Review your past.
Ps. 103:2 & 5, 1 Sam. 12:24, Ps. 30:4 Give thanks for what has been done and for past blessings. "Count your Blessings".
2. Refocus our present with attitude of thanksgiving.
Ps. 30:12, 69:30, 75:1, 92:1 & 2, 105:1 ; 1st Thess. 5:18 and Heb. 13:15 "It's impossible to b e grateful and negative at the same time".
3. Restore our perspective.
Col. 2: 6 & 7, James 1:17 According to the Bible, a grateful Christian is the "Norm". No matter what we don't have, we have more to be thankful for than we can imagine. We need to reset our focus on what we have and not on what we don't have.
4. Rehearsing our Praise.
Ps. 69:30, Eph. 5:18-20, Ps. 107:8, 15, 21 & 31 We are commanded to praise no matter where we are in life.
5. Renew our passion for the Lord and for Life.
"Thank you Lord for a new day, for your abundant blessings, for family and friends". I will strive to be grateful to God and for all that he has blessed me with.
If you own just one Bible you are abundantly blessed. One third of the world does not have access to even one Bible. If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million that will not survive the week. If you've never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of over five hundred million people around the world. If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of the people on Earth. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet and spare change, you are among the top 8% of the worlds wealthy. If you hold up your head with a smile and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majorities that can, do not. If you prayed yesterday and today, you are in the minority because you believe in God's willingness to hear and answer prayer. And if you believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, you are part of a small minority in the world.
Helen Keller wrote; "They took away what should have been my eyes but I remembered Milton's "Paradise Lost". They took away what should have been my ears; Beethoven came and wiped away my tears. They took away what should have been my tongue but I have talked to God when I was young, He would not let them take away my soul and possessing that, I still posses the whole".
